The proactive maintenance begins August 5 across campus.
Documents
F&S staff will begin flushing campus fire hydrants on Monday, August 5. Crews will perform the work during early morning hours to minimize any potential inconveniences, such as lower-than-typical water pressure or temporarily discolored water.
Water will continue to be safe to use and consume during the hydrant flushing period. However, if possible, please wait until flushing has subsided in your area, then turn on the cold tap water until it runs clear.
This proactive maintenance helps improve overall water quality by clearing the buildup of mineral deposits from the water mains. The process also confirms proper hydrant operation and ensures adequate water flow is available to facilities.
The university tests the water distribution system regularly, following US Environmental Protection Agency and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency protocols.
