EPC 05 - Laboratory Facilities Project

Started: 01/05/2018

Completed: 08/01/2023

This project has already provided $2.9M of cost avoidance and reduced the university's carbon footprint by 18,863 tons of CO2e.

The F&S Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) hit substantial completion of the Laboratory Facilities Project. Expertise and collaboration across campus were essential to modernizing facilities and revitalizing educational and research spaces for U of I students, faculty, and staff.

May 2018, the Board of Trustees approved Schneider Electric to implement energy conservation measures at 6 locations including Chemical & Life Sciences Laboratory, Roger Adams Laboratory, Illinois Sustainable Technology Center, Beckman Institute, Natural Resources Studies Annex, and Forbes Natural History Building.

The comprehensive energy conservation measures in this project have provided more than $2.9M of cost avoidance and reduced the university’s carbon footprint by 18,863 tons of CO2e.

This significant energy conservation collaboration across campus modernized building systems, increased occupant comfort, addressed deferred maintenance items, and significantly reduced energy usage in the following facilities:

  • Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology
  • Chemical & Life Sciences Laboratory
  • Forbes Natural History Building
  • Illinois Sustainable Technology Center
  • Natural Resource Studies Annex
  • Roger Adams Laboratory

EPC provides campus customers with a comprehensive set of energy efficiency, renewable energy, and distributed generation measures and is accompanied by guarantees that the energy savings produced by the project will be sufficient to finance the total cost of the project.

The university contracts with a qualified Energy Service Company (ESCO) to provide all of the services required to design and implement a comprehensive project, from the initial energy audit through the long-term guarantee of project savings.
